April – June 2010

The following is a report of what has been done from April to June 2010

1. Project to Develop Youth Core Leader
On 29 to 30 April, the group of 40 youths from Bangkok and the neighbouring provinces gathered for an additional training to practice self-discipline, attend Workshops on “Life-skills in Relationships with the opposite sex for Youths and having Healthy Attitudes toward sex before marriage”. Besides that, these young leaders were given the opportunity of learning new skills by Staff of the Nong Bon Water Sports Centre, Bangkok. They now have a wider choice in the use of their free time to better their new-found skills in kayaking, sailing and wind-surfing.

2. Training for Volunteers to start Activity Centres to “Mould the Next generation”
The Foundation trained volunteers who were interested in the developmental work for children and youths, especially in various age-groups, in teambuilding, personality profiles, song and game leading etc. Altogether, 37 trainees attended the training from 9 – 10 May, and they were given the opportunity to practice in groups as well. Those who attended came from Chonburi, Chiangrai, Suphanburi, Radtchburi and Bangkok.

3. Training to run activities to develop Hill Tribe youths
As the schools on the hilly regions are limited in number and upper secondary levels are even less, so the hill tribe students have to travel to the towns for their higher level education. Due to the vast distance from their homes to school, these students have to stay at the boarding schools and they only get to visit their homes during longer school holidays. The Foundation thus trained 27 dormitory-persons-in-charge, as well as youths from about 12 tribal groups from the Saharsart School, Chiangrai on the 19 th June, so that they would be able to run wholistic activites (that develop them physically, intellectually, spiritually and socially) for the tribal residents in the boarding homes every Saturday.

4. Centres for “Moulding the NeXt Generation”
About 18 activity centers started to meet with children and youths for wholistic development at the various locations, so that they may mature physically, intellectually, spiritually and socially.

5. Visitation and Follow Up Work
Staffs and volunteers visited various activity centres in the provinces like Chiangmai, Chiangrai, Phisanuloke, Ratchaburi, Chonburi, Suphanburi and the communities in Bangkok and were able to dialogue with the children, youths and volunteers to encourage each other, share experiences, give short but practical trainings. The youths exchanged ideas and we saw changes in their lives as well as that of their families.

In Thailand, where lately, has been a great need to dialogue so that there will be national unity, it is imperative for the young ones to be trained and developed socially, so as to achieve a sustainable future for all in the country.

The Foundation is grateful to all who have had a part to support and encourage us to this end. May the God’s blessings be upon you, your families and your careers.

January – March 2010

The following is a report of what has been done from January to March 2010

1. Children’s Day Project
The Foundation contributed sports equipment, gifts and daily necessities to the Yannawa District Office in celebration of the Children’s Day for the year 2010, on 9 January that was given to the Wat Dok Mai School so that students have the opportunity to express themselves, developing them in areas of the physical, emotions, social and wisdom .

2. Education for Kids Project
The Foundation gave Educational equipment, books, stationery to the underprivileged children in the district of Lardprao, through partnership with the Baan Prachrit Foundation, including teaching materials that were beneficial to the development of the children in that area.

3. Global Giving Project
Since the Foundation is of a charitable nature, we are dependant on the donations of others to help develop the society. With the present financial situation, the Foundation also faced challenges in her sources of income. However, with the help of Global Giving (an USA-based Organisation that helps to liaise charities with potential donors), the chances of higher visibility via the internet was given to assist our fund-raising efforts. When Mr Bill Brower from Global Giving came to Thailand to conduct workshops for non-profit organizations, 17 people from 11 organisations attended his talks held on 19 February, held at The Nine Park Residence located off Srinakarin Road. Mr Brower also had the opportunity of visiting the kids in Klong Toey and Samut Songkhram activity centres.

4. Project “Training of Volunteers in Practical Skills for the Improvement of Life Quality for the Youths and Their Families on the Theme – The Servant Leader”
On 23-26 March 2010, the Foundation organized training for the about 60 trainees, from Bangkok and the other provinces on the topic of Being a Servant Leader at the King Park Avenue Hotel. The trainer-facilitator Ms Khoo Seok Lin from Singapore emphasised on how a Servant Leader has to develop on the personal and team levels, in a wholistic manner namely, the physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual arenas. The ‘Best Test’ in evaluating one’s leadership as a Servant Leader that is sustainable, as described by Robert Greenleaf, was passed on to the trainees so that all can take these principles back home to practice on oneself, the team and the youths that are under our care.

5. Centres to “Mould the NeXt Generation”
The 18 activity centres in Bangkok and the upcountry conducted Award-giving ceremonies to celebrate the successes of the youths in the second school term, in that they have undergone developmental progress in life-skills and in the educational, physical, spiritual and service components of life.

The Foundation wishes to thank all

who has had a stake in supporting the activities

in the past quarter that goes to sustain

The Girls’ Brigade and the Young Men’s Brigade Thailand are indebted to God for a very good trainer-facilitator from Singapore, Ms Khoo Seok Lin, whom we have to wait for 5 years for her to be available as she has a very tight training schedule at the Singapore national government level, among corporate managements, principals of schools, churches, non-profit organizations and even commercial companies.

The above seminar was conducted from 24-25 April 2010 at the King Park Avenue Hotel. There were about 60 participants who came from various churches, institutions and Christian and Catholic schools. The seminar helped all to grasp the meaning of Servant Leadership, for which Jesus was the model of nurturing and commitment to His disciples, developing them into wholesome people in the realms of the physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual. Trainees were also challenged with the “Best Test of a Servant Leader” by Robert Greenleaf, where the leaders have to evaluate themselves on how well they have done in developing the organsiation and those under them. They were encouraged to consider this test at 4 levels namely personal, one-to-one, as a team and between organizations. On top of that, the trainer was able to use a range of interesting aids and gifts to help participants understand difficult topic such as “Leaders of Change”, how to be real to oneself in service, and also practical applications on Journeying to wholeness in God.

Report from Foundation for Life
October to December 2009

The following is a report of what has been done from October to December 2009

1. Project to Develop Youth Leaders on the Theme “A Life of Liberty”
Liberty without boundaries is dangerous, both to the person and to society, however liberty within boundary will lead to growth when under the guardianship of a caring adult. This is true for the budding child and even more so for the transitioning youth, who need a mature friend to help give them a basis for making right choices in their daily lives.
This year our Foundation organized 3 leadership camps on the theme ‘A Life of Liberty’ from 19-22 October, with specific objectives for the following groups namely; the preteen girls, the teenage girls and for the boys. Wholistic development was emphasized so that all campers have physical, emotional and intellectual input, while giving them a chance to serve each other in the camps. A total of about 300 campers from various communities in the provinces, both the lowlanders and the highlanders gathered together. They came from places like Bangkok, Khon Kaen, Chonburi, Chiangmai, Chiangrai, Rayong and Samut Songkhram. These youths with varied backgrounds learnt to live and work together as teams, had the freedom for creative thinking, learnt what it meant to respect those of the opposite sex, having fun with activities that provided both liberty and boundary. They also brain-stormed for the activities that will take place in the year 2010.
Furthermore, all campers had the opportunity to practice using the Project “S.M.A.R.T. Scheme”, where they learnt about how to Save, to Spend, to Give and to Invest. Circumstances simulating the daily life were created and ‘unforeseen’ situations arose that put stress on each campers’ financial status, so they had to either solve the ‘problem’ themselves or had to do it with the help of friends. This activity so impressed the campers that many decided to apply it in their daily lives back home.

The following is a report of what has been done from July to September 2009

1. Project “Camps for Kids by Kids” on the Theme “One Accord”
As an on-going project from April, the Foundation gathered the core group of 40 young leaders from Bangkok and suburbs to brainstorm, teach skills in organizing camps like looking after younger kids on safety issues and taking care of kids that come from upcountry, as well as planning activities and delegated tasks to the groups from various provinces. The theme was “One Accord”. As a result, the camp came into realization from July 4 to 6 at Prachuapkirikan province with a total of 250 campers from various provinces. Campers learnt though fun activities that aim to develop them physically, emotionally, intellectually and socially for instance, station games that build strong teams to be in One Accord, sharing in groups for moral encouragement, handcrafts, etc. On the final day, campers gave the young camp organizers a rousing approval for a great camp and for being exemplary in their conducts.

2. Project “Facilitating Workshops for Leaders”
The Foundation was privileged to have Mr Lai Mun Loon, a partner from Compass Training Hub, Singapore who offered to train 20 of our leaders and volunteers from Bangkok and upcountry on 19 Sep 09. The objective of the training was to use creative games to facilitate learning, build self-esteem and value others and establish strong teams. All trainees benefited greatly from the seminar and were able to practice these skills to further develop the children and youths in their care.

Poverty, destitution, lack of resources etc. are complex obstacles in life that may have devastating impact on our youths either directly or indirectly. As such the ‘blue-prints’ to teach kids to be smart in giving, spending and saving thus took about 5 years to formulate, as observations were made. As starters, mini-ventures were launched to instill the habits of in saving via the production of the savings doll. This year the Foundation did the first batch of training for 250 children and youths (from primary to university levels) and even adult volunteers, from Bangkok and the provinces, so that all may know how to give to others, budget their expenses and save for future investments. The response was good and the Foundation will follow-up on this with the hope that the cycle of “scarsity mentality” may be broken to be replaced by a life-style of sufficiency.

1. Project Bicycles for Kids
As the Foundation continues to play her part in the wholistic development of the lives of children and youths run weekly at the Mae Yang Har (government) School, Tambon Borkaew, Ampur Samerng, Chiangmai, it has come to our knowledge that during the rainy seasons, pupils loathe to wear their socks to school, as they will be soiled with red dirt from the country roads as they walk to school. Thus before the start of the new academic year, the Foundation was happy for the opportunity to receive donations of 10 bicycles in cooperation with the Unilever Thai Trading Pte Co., in their “Moo Rider – this bike for kids” Project. In this project, the school receives 9 bicycles while the pupil who writes a winning essay on “Various academic subjects that I can learn from the bicycle” receives 1 bicycle of his/her own. The Foundation liaised to publicise to the pupils in the school to write on this topic. As a result, Nikom Tontalik of primary 5, won the prized bicycles for himself and his school.
